What are urgent care and walk-ins?

Urgent care is a specialized service providing medical treatment for illnesses and injuries that don’t require emergency care but do need prompt attention.

Walk-in care means you can get urgent medical care by dropping by the clinic during working hours. If the clinic is closed, you can use their communication system or patient portal to get a message to the team, and they will respond promptly.

What conditions are treated through urgent care and walk-ins?

The conditions often treated by Harlandale Clinic’s urgent care team include:

  • Coughs
  • Fevers
  • Colds and flu
  • Sore throats
  • Earaches
  • Sinus infections
  • Minor burns
  • Skin rashes and infections
  • Sprains and strains
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Asthma or COPD flare-ups
  • Headaches and migraines

The team also treats minor injuries such as cuts, puncture wounds, and abrasions.

When do I need the emergency room instead of urgent care?

Call Harlandale Clinic any time you’re not sure if you need urgent care or the emergency room. They can ask a few questions and determine whether they can help or if you should go to the emergency room.

As a general guideline, you should go to the nearest emergency room for problems such as:

  • Heavy bleeding
  • Fractures
  • Seizures
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Poisoning
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke

The symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain or pressure (not everyone has severe pain), dizziness, difficulty breathing, and pain in your jaw, back, or arm.

During a stroke, you may experience drooping on one side of your face, weakness in one arm, difficulty speaking, or trouble understanding when others speak.

What should I expect during urgent care and walk-ins?

At Harlandale Clinic, the team’s first priority is ensuring your safety and stopping bleeding if needed. They learn about your medical history, medications you’re taking, allergies, symptoms, and what caused your injury. Finally, they do an exam and run diagnostic testing in their in-office lab.

After diagnosing your condition, your provider takes care of the appropriate treatment and prescribes medications if needed. Urgent care isn’t intended to provide long-term care, so they schedule a follow-up appointment when needed to monitor your health.

Anytime you need urgent care, you only need to walk in to Harlandale Clinic. However, you can also call the office to schedule an appointment or connect through telehealth if you can’t get to the office.
